Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
