Approximately 35,000 applicants could be compromised, alerts the United States embassy

A major security compromise in the Federal Republic of Somalia's e-visa platform may have exposed personal information pertaining to tens of thousands of applicants, involving American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in Somalia has cautioned.

Officials stated gathered credible reports that "unidentified hackers" had penetrated the Somali government's digital visa application portal, likely endangering details concerning at least 35,000 individuals.

The exposed records circulating online comprise names, photographs, dates of birth, relationship status, residential locations and email contacts, according to a United States official announcement issued on Thursday.

"This security incident is ongoing and might reveal any personal data you enter into this platform," the UK has similarly alerted travelers.

"Consider the risks before applying for an electronic visa required for entry into the Federal Republic."

Official Reaction

Government officials have not issued statements regarding the incident. Nevertheless authorities has transferred visa application system from the previous platform the initial application portal to the new application website, without offering an official explanation.

"Although American diplomatic mission in Somalia is unable to confirm whether applicant details belongs to the compromise, individuals who have applied through the electronic visa system might be compromised," the official communication stated.

Geopolitical Impact

The revised application procedure requires every visitor, comprising individuals from the self-declared republic of the northern territory and the self-governing territory of Puntland, to request travel visas through digital means.

Opponents claim applicants have experienced extra fees in particular territories, amounting to duplicate payments.

Regional Dynamics

The northern territory, that proclaimed statehood in the early nineties, governs itself via separate governmental bodies but has not been global recognition. The Federal Government asserts that this territory continues to belong to its sovereign territory.

The reported compromise exacerbates ongoing disputes between Somali federal authorities and northern authorities over control of aviation space. Even though federal authorities re-established full control of its airspace in the past decade, Somaliland regularly disputes the arrangement.

Ongoing Conflict

The disagreement intensified recently after the northern region's leader the regional leader said the northern territory would refuse Somalia's e-visa and instructed that airlines need to acquire clearance from Somaliland officials before entering their territorial skies.

Yet prominent aviation companies have refused to board passengers without federal visa authorization.

On Saturday, Hargeisa's international relations official the diplomatic representative reiterated that "every person entering Somaliland can acquire travel authorization on arrival", declaring Mogadishu's digital application process posed risks and cautioning that "individual details could be accessed by extremist organizations" because of utilizing the system.

Aviation Challenges

The conflict has left certain visitors destined for Hargeisa stranded at airports after being denied boarding for lacking Somalia's e-visa.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, the transport official, has told media outlets that the directives - first announced in recent months - were implemented on 10 November.

He said companies that ignore might be directed to change course, and claimed numerous flights had already been rerouted.

Aviation Authority Dispute

Recorded material published by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority appears to show local air-traffic controllers providing guidance to international pilots - an action celebrated domestically as an assertion of the region's independence.

However the federal aviation regulator maintains it possesses sole administrative and legal control concerning the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes the whole nation's airspace. Authorities have instructed every plane to ignore all directives coming from entities except Mogadishu.

Officials cautioned that ignoring national and worldwide air transport standards could create security threats and cause "serious legal consequences".
