EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
